With my good friend and fly fisherman extraordinaire John Morgan as our guide Hudson, his new friend Jack and I decided to elevate. We went up into the Rockies between 10,000 and 12,000 feet above sea level to allow Hudson to put a marker on the wall that others would have to struggle to reach. Here you see the Hound of Renown in a beaver pond way up in the mountains. Alas this wonderful photography is not a reflection of my meager skills but the work of a professional photographer, John Morgan. Yes the one and the same. A man who wears many hats.
Here Hudson and Jack take a break and play a quick game of tag. This is gambolling par excellence.
Hudson leaves Eleven Mile Reservoir at the headwaters of the South Platte in South Park.
Here is Hudson in the Twin Lakes near Independence Pass in the headwaters of the Arkansas.
Later in the day Hudson comes out of Cottonwood Lake in the headwaters of the Arkansas River which I followed earlier as I drove through Kansas.
Back down to 6000 feet Hudson takes time out for a dip in Bear Creek.
In some ways, I mean this blog to be a celebration of our canine friends. The service they provide, the joy and comfort they give us can be a good model for behavior when we see humans acting badly. But alas the gifts dogs give us are often not reciprocated. Sometimes these dogs which are discarded are rescued by big hearted folks. People like my baker friend Hannah Warren of Scarborough Maine and London England and my favorite mystery author David Rosenfelt and this week I met reporter and author Sharon Peters who wrote Trusting Calvin: How a Dog Helped Heal a Holocaust Survivor's Heart. Sharon Peters is the Co-founder of The Old Mutt Hut, A Retirement Home for abandoned Dogs. If you are like me when you see these inspiring acts of kindness you think to yourself, I don't know if I could do this. Fortunately you do not have to, but it behoves all of us to support these folks. The Old Mutt Hut is a a nonprofit retirement home for senior dogs that have been abandoned. They are cared for and loved by a 24-7 caregiver. PO Box 7085 Colorado Springs, CO 80933 You can find Sharon's organization on Facebook and maybe find a way to help.
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world!
